SAT Tutoring

Catalyst offers a variety of SAT options.

What is the SAT?
The SAT, or the Scholastic Assessment Test, is a standardized exam that most high school students take in order to apply to colleges. Generally, most students take their first SAT test during their junior year of high school. If their score is high enough for the colleges they wish to apply to, then they may submit that score and be finished with the SAT. However, if it is not, they may take the test a second or even third time.

The SAT tests three main areas: Reading, Writing, and Mathematical Reasoning. Each time your child tests, he or she will receive three separate scores (a critical reading score, a writing score, and a math score) between 200 and 800 points. The three scores are then combined to give a total score ranging between 600 and 2400 points (with a median score of about 1500 points).

What does the SAT mean for my child?
Taking the SAT is the first step in finding a college that is right for your child! The SAT helps colleges get to know your child better by giving them insight into how he or she thinks, reasons, solves problems, and communicates. The SAT is not just a knowledge-based test; it also measures how well your child can apply that knowledge to solve a variety of problems.

The SAT score is only one of the many factors that colleges consider. When reviewing your child’s application, colleges also assess your his or her academic record, involvement in school activities and community service projects, application essays, and letters of recommendation.

Why should my child prepare before taking the SAT?
While most students have already covered the academic material that the SAT covers by the time they are ready to begin taking the test, the SAT is not merely a knowledge-based test. The SAT will challenge your child to reason solutions to problems in ways they have been rarely asked to do previously. Having someone help your child work through this process will help them achieve their highest level of excellence in the areas of reasoning, problem solving, and time management.

The best way to prepare for the SAT is to take challenging high school classes, read extensively, and write as often as possible. However, for more specific help, it is best to work with someone who can help your child review the concepts covered and practice problems similar to those on the SAT tests.

There are numerous advantages to having your child undergo SAT preparation:
  • Opportunities to become familiar with the format of the SAT test
  • Learn the various different types of questions
  • Run through hundreds of practice questions with guided help
  • Instructional help to cover any forgotten concepts
  • Learn individual strategies that fit your child’s needs to maximize test scores
  • Gain experience taking official practice tests and learning proper pacing during the test
  • Numerous opportunities to enhance skills in writing effective essays
  • Continuous feedback helps shift the focus on areas that need the most improvement
